TWO WAYS TO USE HEYMETADATA
What Can You Do With HeyMetadata?
METADATA VIEWER
View & Inspect Metadata
Inspect available metadata before sharing, publishing, or processing a file. View EXIF, image information, audio tags, video details, document properties, and other supported metadata.
Create a cleaned copy of a supported file by removing metadata fields HeyMetadata can process. Your original file remains separate from the generated copy.
View available metadata and create cleaned copies for supported image, audio, video, and document formats. Processing options and available fields depend on the file and format.
Images
JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF/TIF, HEIC/HEIF
Inspect image metadata, including available EXIF fields, or create a processed copy with supported metadata removed.
Inspecting a photo, video, audio file, PDF, or document before publishing, sending, or uploading helps you understand what information travels with it.
Remove supported metadata such as location, device, author, timestamps, and descriptive fields where the application can process them.
Prepare Files for Sharing
Create a cleaner copy before uploading a photo, sending a recording, or publishing a document.
Create a Metadata-Aware Copy
HeyMetadata generates a processed copy rather than modifying your original file. The result reflects the metadata fields the application can handle.
Verify Before Publishing
Review the cleaned copy and confirm the supported metadata fields were removed before you share or publish the file.
UNDERSTAND FILE METADATA
What Can Metadata Reveal?
Metadata can contain information about how, when, and sometimes where a file was created. The information available depends on the file format, the application that created it, and the metadata stored in the file.
Location
GPS coordinates and location information may be stored in image metadata when available.
Example: GPS: 28.6139° N, 77.2090° E
Device Information
Photos and other media can contain information about the camera, phone, or device used to create the file.
Example: Camera: Canon EOS R5
Dates & Times
Metadata can include creation, modification, capture, or other timestamps, depending on the file and format.
Example: Date Taken: 2026-08-14 18:42
Author Information
Documents and other files may contain author, creator, or related ownership fields.
Example: Author: John Smith
Software Information
Metadata can identify software, applications, encoders, or other tools associated with creating or processing a file.
Example: Software: Adobe Photoshop
Technical Details
Files may contain technical information such as dimensions, codecs, color information, audio properties, and other format-specific fields.
Example: Image Size: 4032 × 3024
Available metadata varies by file, format, software, and the information stored in the file. View image metadata in your own file.
HOW HEYMETADATA WORKS
Inspect or process a file in three steps
01
Choose a File
Select or drop a supported file into HeyMetadata.
02
Inspect or Process
Review available metadata, or create a processed copy with supported metadata removed.
03
Review or Download
Review the results or report, then download the processed file when available. Files are processed locally in your browser; no upload is required.
METADATA TYPES
What Metadata Can HeyMetadata Handle?
The fields shown depend on what the selected file contains and what its format exposes.
Image Metadata
Available EXIF, IPTC, XMP, camera and device information, GPS, orientation, dimensions, ICC/color information, and other supported image fields.
Audio Metadata
Common audio tags, technical audio information, and embedded artwork where available.
Video Metadata
Container and stream information, technical properties, timestamps, tags, and other metadata exposed by the video processing pipeline.
Document Metadata
PDF information and supported Office document properties for DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX.
METADATA REPORTS
Keep a downloadable record of your findings
After scanning a file, use the existing report control in the tool to generate a local PDF report. Depending on the file, it may include file information, metadata sections, technical metadata, file hashes, header information, raw XMP, and embedded thumbnail details.
HeyMetadata processes files locally in your browser. No file upload to a processing server is required for the metadata tools, so your files can remain on your device while you inspect or process them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions about viewing and removing metadata
What is metadata?
Metadata is information stored in or associated with a file, such as dates, device details, author fields, technical properties, or descriptive tags.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF is image metadata commonly used for camera settings, capture dates, dimensions, orientation, and sometimes GPS coordinates.
What information can metadata contain?
Depending on the file, it may include location, timestamps, camera or device information, author details, software, codecs, audio tags, document properties, or technical fields.
How does HeyMetadata view metadata?
Select a supported file and HeyMetadata reads the fields available to its browser-based extractors. It does not require an upload.
How does HeyMetadata remove metadata?
It creates a processed copy locally and removes the supported metadata fields that the application can process. It does not guarantee removal of every possible field.
Are my files uploaded?
No file upload to a processing server is required for the metadata tools. Files are processed locally in your browser.
Is HeyMetadata free?
Yes. HeyMetadata is free to use, with browser processing subject to the supported file size and format limits shown by the tool.
Does removing metadata affect file quality?
It depends on the format and workflow. Some image processing may produce small pixel-level differences, while video and audio stream-copy workflows avoid re-encoding.
Can I view metadata before removing it?
Yes. Inspect the file in the tool first, then choose the removal action when it is available.
Can I generate a metadata report?
Yes. After scanning, use Download Metadata Report to create a local PDF containing the available inspection results.
The existing browser workflow scans the audio tags and creates a clean copy.
03
Verify the result
The generated audio file is checked again for the removable metadata fields identified by the workflow.
04
Download
Download the cleaned audio file when it is ready.
SUPPORTED AUDIO FORMATS
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, and OGG
These are the audio extensions supported by the existing implementation.
WHAT IS REMOVED
Audio tags, encoder information, and embedded artwork
The audio cleaner discards global and stream metadata and drops attached picture streams such as album artwork. It uses stream copy, so the audio bitstream is passed through without re-encoding.
AUDIO FAQ
Questions about audio metadata removal
What is audio metadata?
Audio metadata is information stored with an audio file, such as title, artist, album, genre, comments, dates, encoder tags, track details, and embedded artwork.
Why remove metadata from an audio file?
Removing supported audio tags can remove identifying or unwanted information before you share or publish the file.
Can I remove metadata from MP3 files?
Yes. MP3 is supported, along with WAV, M4A, FLAC, and OGG.
Does this remove album artwork?
Yes. The existing audio cleanup drops attached picture streams, which removes embedded album artwork from the generated file.
Which audio formats are supported?
The audio workflow accepts MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, and OGG files.
Is my audio file uploaded to a server?
No upload is required. The existing workflow processes the audio locally in your browser using JavaScript, WebAssembly, and FFmpeg.
