ABOUT METADATA

What Is Metadata & Why Remove It?

Every photo, video, PDF, and document you create contains hidden metadata — details like GPS coordinates, device model, timestamps, and author name. A metadata remover strips this data before you share files, helping protect your privacy.

EXIF Data in Images

Digital cameras and smartphones embed EXIF data — camera make, lens settings, capture date, and often precise GPS coordinates. Sharing photos with this data intact on social media or forums can unintentionally reveal your location and habits to anyone who inspects the file.

Metadata in Documents & Media

PDFs store author names, creation dates, and software versions. Office files (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) contain revision history, company names, and editor details. Video and audio files can include encoder info, GPS tags, and embedded artwork — all removed by HeyMetadata's metadata remover.

Browser-Based & Private

HeyMetadata processes files entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript and WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded to a server — your images, videos, and documents never leave your device. Close the tab and every trace is gone.

Broad Format Support

Use HeyMetadata as an image metadata remover for JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, and HEIC. As a video metadata remover for MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM — without re-encoding. As a PDF metadata remover or audio tag stripper for MP3, FLAC, and more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Metadata Removal

What is EXIF data?

EXIF EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in digital image files that stores technical information about the photo. It can include details such as the camera make and model, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, date and time the photo was taken, and, on devices with location services enabled, GPS coordinates. HeyMetadata's built-in EXIF data viewer lets you see the metadata embedded in your image before removing it.

How does HeyMetadata remove metadata?

Drop or select a file, and HeyMetadata scans it for available metadata such as EXIF, IPTC, XMP, GPS information, document properties, and audio tags. When you click “Remove metadata,” a cleaned copy is generated directly in your browser. HeyMetadata then re-scans the processed file to verify that the metadata fields it can remove have been stripped before providing the cleaned file for download.

Is HeyMetadata really free?

Yes. HeyMetadata is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no file limits beyond the 250 MB browser processing cap. There are no premium tiers or hidden fees.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. HeyMetadata runs entirely in your browser tab. Your files are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted. All processing happens locally on your device using JavaScript and WebAssembly.

Does removing metadata affect file quality?

For images, a canvas re-draw is used so there may be minor quality differences at the pixel level. For video and audio, HeyMetadata uses stream-copy mode — the media bitstream is passed through unchanged with no re-encoding, so quality is preserved exactly.
